Although both the cylinder mold and the headbox work in the “forming section” of the paper machine, their roles are completely different.
The headbox is the “pulp distributor,” responsible for spreading the pulp evenly onto the wire; while the cylinder mold is the “forming cylinder,” responsible for filtering the slurry in the cylinder wire machine and forming the wet paper web.
Working Position: In fourdrinier or cylinder paper machines, the headbox is located at the front of the forming wire; while the cylinder mold, primarily found in cylinder paper machines, is the core carrier for wet web forming.
Core Function: The headbox disperses fibers and sprays the pulp evenly, laying the foundation for paper sheet formation; the cylinder mold, through pressure created by the internal and external water level difference, filters the fibers in the pulp and “scoops” them onto the wire to form the paper layer.
Dewatering Method: The headbox simply sprays the pulp onto the wire, where it is subsequently dewatered naturally or under vacuum; the cylinder mold itself is the primary dewatering tool, relying on the internal and external pressure difference for forced filtration and dewatering.
